Key Changes Are Evil

They should not be allowed in the house of our Lord, especially not when His people are worshiping Him through song. That's neither the time nor place for the Godless wickedness of changing keys to one that's always higher and harder to sing.

And that's all I'm going to say about it.

Maybe.

Oh no! I can't agree with you here.

Well, maybe.

Key changes that are poorly executed/set up are no good, but there's nothing better than a really good key change to add some drama.

If they are really good, I get goosebumps.

We actually sang a real hymn in church today...and everyone was singing and it wasn't altered in any weird way. It was so nice for a change.

I know I'd like to hear more. Of the story, that is. I'm guessing I wouldn't want to hear more of the singing itself.

Christina,

No, the key changes are properly executed, and I'm not surprised you like them, being musically inclined as you are. But I sing probably second soprano, and those key changes take the song out of my range and make it painful to keep singing.

The worst is when they do it to Shout to the Lord, because it means I can't sing the last third of the song with full worshipfulness of the heart. That's not the one they did it to today, though. I've forgotten today's song already, out of my desire not to relive the pain.

But I stand by my statement that taking a person out of her attitude of worship in order to inflict an unattainable key on her just because it makes the song more "interesting" (our worship minister's perspective) is just evil.

I like the "maybe" part.

I solve that problem myself by speaking the words instead of singing them. I make them a prayer of sorts.
